Because the switch was an afterthought, there is no adjoining stud to fasten to. Enter the old-work box:

See that flag sticking up? and the screw in front? After shoving the box into the hole, tightening the screw clamps onto drywall between the front lip and flag. There's a second flag on the bottom of the box. Easy peasy. Seriously, it was an 88-cent fix.
